Gabriela Irrazabal

Professor of Sociology of Health and Culture
Expertise: Sociology of health, beliefs and well-being, bioethics, scientific literacy, gender and health, open science

Dr. Gabriela Irrazabal is a PhD in Social Sciences and an expert in the sociology of health, culture, literacy, beliefs and healthcare, bioethics and open science. She is a professor at the University of Buenos Aires (Society and State, Irrazabal Chair) and a research associate at RMIT Europe, where her research focuses on approaches and technologies for health and well-being.

Her research explores the intersection of sociology, health, and beliefs, with a strong emphasis on how social and cultural determinants influence well-being. Through her work, she analyzes how belief systems and social structures shape health practices, especially in vulnerable populations.

His experience aligns with initiatives aimed at improving healthy lifestyles, as he has studied how different social groups access and participate in the field of health and healthcare. Given the growing role of digital tools in shaping healthcare at the individual and societal level, his knowledge of community engagement and social structures is essential to understanding today's digital contexts.

Gabriela also has a keen interest in the relationship between gender and health, especially in understanding how social, cultural and belief factors influence access to health and care. Her research contributes to initiatives that address barriers arising from social structures.

She is an associate researcher at the National Council for Scientific and Technical Research of Argentina (CONICET). She has been a principal investigator in ten international projects on bioethics, health, human rights, culture and beliefs. She has been a Fulbright scholar and visiting professor at universities in Latin America and Europe. She collaborates closely with the BCURE group at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

Gabriela is a member of the International Network on Science and Belief in Society, the International Network on Science, Religion, and Health and the International Sociological Association. She is currently president of the Global Open Science Association.
