Expertise: Values, attitudes, culture, morality, sexual and reproductive rights, South America

Martín Couto holds a Bachelor's degree in Sociology and a Master's degree in Contemporary Latin American Studies (Universidad de la República de Uruguay - Udelar) and is a predoctoral researcher in the Department of Sociology at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). He is also a lecturer in the Department of Sociology at the Faculty of Social Sciences at Udelar.

Her doctoral thesis deals with a comparative analysis of attitudes towards abortion and sexual diversity in South America, in which she addresses attitudes towards these two highly relevant issues using theoretical tools from the sociology of culture, the sociology of morality and the sociology of religion, carrying out survey analyses complemented with analyses using Big Data tools.

She has been a lecturer (with teaching and research tasks) at Udelar since 2015. From 2015 to 2020 she was an assistant in the Gender, Reproductive Health and Sexualities Program of the Institute of Health Psychology of the Faculty of Psychology (Udelar). In this faculty she taught courses on Human Rights and Gender and researched the accessibility of abortion services in the health system, as well as participating in the development of a survey on sexual behaviors and health.

Since 2020, he has held a position as an effective lecturer in the Department of Sociology of the Faculty of Social Sciences (Udelar). In this faculty, he researches on the sociology of culture and attitudes towards issues of sexuality and reproduction. He has taught courses in Quantitative Methodology, Social Statistics and Society and Sociological Thought of Latin America.

He currently holds a scholarship from the National Agency for Research and Innovation of Uruguay (ANII) to pursue a PhD abroad. In addition, he has been selected by the International Sociological Association (ISA) to participate in the ISA PhD Laboratory held in Rabat, Morocco, in 2025. He was also selected to participate in the UCSIA Summer School 2025 to be held in Antwerp, Belgium.

His teaching and research career is linked to participation in the media and active political and social activism in Uruguay.
